18H FESTIVAL OF TOLERANCE: In the Rearview
''In the Rearview Mirror'' is an authentic, intimate look at the war as it unfolds, following multiple generations of Ukrainian civilians as they suddenly leave their homes and rely on director Maciek Hamela's volunteer van to escape the life-threatening conflict.
As he navigates through minefields to leave Ukraine and tries to pass numerous military checkpoints, Hamela offers us a seat in his vehicle, leading the documentary behind the wheel and behind the camera, traveling the roads across Ukraine to safely transport deported refugees to Poland. The van covers tens of thousands of kilometers and serves as a waiting room, a hospital, a shelter, and a zone of trust and confession of randomly connected compatriots. In the rearview mirror is a collective portrait composed of a series of experiences of Ukrainians who share the same goal: finding a safe haven in the midst of conflict. In the temporary asylum granted to all travelers, their differences in gender, age, skin color, physical condition, origin, identity, worldview and religion become irrelevant. While the war itself remains in the background, its reflection and effect are evident and raw.
