Maria (40) tries to successfully take care of her four children while at the same time ambitiously building a career in a demanding job. Sigmund, her second husband, is rarely present due to frequent business trips. Their marriage begins to fall apart due to differences in needs.

Despite Maria's desperate efforts to prevent this, she will have to face her worst fears when Sigmund asks for a divorce. This forces her to unbridled sadness, anger and unconscious memories from her own past. Maria eventually realizes that part of what is key to understanding her situation lies in her relationship with her own mother and her internal self-image. Through a deeper confrontation with her mother, she finally connects with herself in a way she didn't even know she was missing. When he meets his wife for a conversation, the pain of abandonment is no longer the same.
