Austrian Alps around 1900. No one knows exactly how old the orphan Andreas Egger is when he arrives at Kranzstocker's farm in the valley. For a God-fearing but violent peasant, he is at best a cheap sidekick. Only old Ahnl takes care of the boy. When she dies, nothing holds the now grown Egger back.

Full of strength and determination, he joins a work group building one of the first cable cars that will also bring electricity and tourists to the valley. With his savings, Egger rents a simple wooden cabin high in the mountains from an innkeeper, where he creates a home for himself and his great love Marie. But their shared happiness is short-lived. The Second World War breaks out, Egger is drafted into the army and ends up in Soviet captivity and returns to the valley only many years later. There, Marie is very close to him for the last time, and old Egger watches with amazement the years that are behind him...
