Young Helene and her sister Martha come to the exciting Berlin of the wild twenties. While Martha loses herself in parties and drugs, Helene wants to study medicine and become a doctor. In Karl, she finds the love of her life. It seems that the doors of the world are wide open for them.

After Karl's surprising death and the social upheaval caused by the Nazis, she meets Wilhelm, who falls madly in love with her. But her life energy and strong will are not compatible with Wilhelm's traditional roles of women and her motherhood. Helene makes an outrageous decision.
