The film is set in the sunlit city of Naples. A smiling Partenope recalls her childhood in which her brothers were obsessed with her. Her anthropology professor considers her a brilliant student.

She considers becoming an actress, but is uninspired by her eccentric acting coach. She wonders if she will become an esthete and meets the drunken writer John Cheever, whose work she admires. Or maybe she could have a romantic relationship with an ugly bishop who every year witnesses the miracle of dried blood becoming liquid, a phenomenon she studies in anthropology...
