After several months of uncertainty caused by the COVID-19 virus pandemic, Kino Zona returned to the summer stage on Friday 26.06. The loyal audience repaid the diligent organizers with an enviable attendance. Before the acclaimed Colombian crime drama "Birds of Summer" unfolded on the big screen, Zadar film fans could witness the premiere of the video announcement of this year's cinema, and the fact that it was accompanied by thunderous applause shows how much they liked it. Two days later, the Italian comedy drama "Like Crazy" was shown, which, as expected, attracted a larger number of members of the fairer sex. On this occasion, we will reveal the titles that will be shown during July, and given the number of genres represented, we believe that each of you will find a title that suits him.
July in the Kino Zona starts on Thursday 02.07. with the unusual musical drama ‘‘ Emma ’’ by celebrated Chilean director Pablo Larraín (‘‘ Tony Manero ’’, ‘‘ No ’’, ‘‘ Club ’’), a story of passion, dance and family shipwrecks. The main roles are played by Mariana Di Girolamo and Gael García Bernal, and in addition to a special recognition at the Venice Film Festival, "Emma" won a special award from the jury of the festival in Ljubljana.
Sunday, July 5, is reserved for a pure-blooded drama that will surely bring a few tears to your eyes and at the same time develop a sense of empathy towards the little protagonist of the film "System Crasher". This drama about a troubled nine-year-old girl who just wants a normal family life will certainly not leave you indifferent, and that statement is supported by numerous awards such as 'Silver Bear' for best director at last year's Berlinale, award for best composer at the European Film Awards or award for best film at the Vukovar Film Festival.
On Wednesday, July 8, something completely different awaits us. The audience proved to us through the hole-filled screening of the film "Parasite" how much they love and appreciate the work of South Korean master director Joon-ho Bong, and now they will have the opportunity to see his SF parable of the social order called "Snowpiercer". Visually sumptuous, filled with a plethora of top actors such as Chris Evans, Kang-ho Song, Ed Harris, John Hurt and Tilda Swinton, “Snowpiercer” is a film that will no doubt delight you and make you think.
After the frozen humanity and the rebellion of the survivors, through the film time machine we slowly return to the Mediterranean and its crystal clear sea where on Sunday, July 12, we follow the life and work of the famous Jacques-Yves Cousteau through the film "Odyssey". The main roles in this beautifully made film include famous names such as Lambert Wilson, Pierre Niney and Audrey Tautou, and it should be noted that "Odyssey" was mostly shot here in Croatia.
From the depths of the sea we will float to the streets of an Italian town ruled by violence. It is, of course, a crime drama "Dogman" by Matteo Garrone, which we will be able to watch on Thursday, July 16th. The plot of this multi-award winning film follows the poor owner of a dog salon Lucio who, under the influence of a violent Simoncino, radically changes his life, and for the worse. The Best Actor awards at the Cannes Film Festival and at the European Film Awards are reason enough for “Dogman” not to be missed.
On Sunday, July 19, arrives the twisted Austrian comedy crime drama "Wild Mouse", which tells the story of a freshly fired music critic who, in the midst of preparing for revenge, has to deal with his wife's obsession with pregnancy. Directed, written and starred by Josef Hader.
Speaking of weird movies, a real party of bizarreness awaits us on Thursday, July 23rd. It is about the Israeli film "Big Bad Wolves", which, among other things, delighted the great Quentin Tarantino, who without hesitation declared it the best film of that year. A story of revenge, religious and national controversy run through the darkest hue of black comedy will no doubt make you both scared and laugh at the same time.
Three days later, that is, on Sunday, July 26, a completely different experience. The extraordinary animated film "Red Turtle" is finally coming to the cinema on the big screen, which will leave both the oldest and the audience from the age of 10 and up breathless. This fantastic story illustrates the complete life cycle and what it represents in itself. From sadness, loneliness, frustration and hopeless agony to endless love, happiness, maturation and parting. In terms of awards and nominations, Michael Dudok de Wit's film won a special jury award at the 2016 Cannes Film Festival, the Annie Award for Best Animated Feature Film, and an Oscar nomination in the Best Animated Feature Film category.
At the very end of the month, more precisely on July 30, the acclaimed Argentine crime comedy "The Heist of the Century" arrives through the "Festival Mediteranskog Filma Split''. The plot of the film is based on true events that took place more than a decade ago, when a group of thieves committed what is considered one of the most notorious bank robberies in the history of Argentina.
