In 1989, 24-year-old Tracy Edwards became the skipper of the first female crew in the history of the overseas sailing race Whitbread (now known as the Ocean Race).

Tracy’s dream of competing ran into a mountain of obstacles: her male counterparts didn’t believe a female crew could succeed, the media bet on her failure, and potential sponsors rejected her for years, fearing poor publicity in case they didn’t survive. But Tracy refused to give up: she mortgaged her home, bought a used boat, and assembled a team of sailors. With the support of her outstanding crew, she changed the world of sports.
